5 Prohibited Foods for Pregnant Women

Women need to pay attention to their food intake for the health and development of the baby in the womb. Not only are healthy foods that pregnant women need to know, but foods that are prohibited for pregnant women are also essential.

The intake obtained by the fetus from the mother while in the womb will have an impact on health conditions and growth and development. The information is nutrients and can also be toxic substances or viruses and bacteria. That is why some of the food below are not recommended for consumption by pregnant women.

Foods that are Prohibited for Pregnant Women

The following are some types of foods that pregnant women should not eat because of the risk of causing health problems:

1. Raw meat

Raw meat or undercooked meat can contain the toxoplasma parasite, which is dangerous for pregnant women because it can cause infection in the fetus, even if pregnant women do not experience any symptoms.

Therefore, if pregnant women want to eat meat, including minced meat and sausage, ensure the meat is thoroughly cooked. Cook until there are no more bloody or pink-looking portions of the heart.

2. Raw eggs

Pregnant women should avoid consuming raw eggs and foods containing raw or undercooked eggs because of the risk of exposure to Salmonella bacteria.

Although it does not directly impact the fetus, Salmonella infection can make pregnant women experience digestive disorders characterized by diarrhea and vomiting.

Ensure pregnant women only eat cooked eggs, marked by all parts of the egg white and yolk having become solid.

3. Fish containing mercury

It is undeniable that fish has many benefits for pregnant women. However, some fish contain a lot of mercury which can hurt pregnancy.

Tuna, mackerel, swordfish, and shark are examples of fish that are not recommended for pregnant women to eat. This is because a large amount of mercury in these fish can interfere with fetal nerve development.

In addition, pregnant women also need to limit the consumption of salmon and mackerel to avoid exposure to dioxin pollutants and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). If pregnant women want to eat sea fish, they should not exceed two moderate servings per week.

4. Milk without pasteurization

Milk is a source of various nutrients needed by pregnant women. However, pregnant women should not consume milk produced without the pasteurization process because there is a risk of containing Listeria bacteria which can cause infection during pregnancy. This also applies to dairy products, such as cheese and yogurt.

5. Raw vegetables

Some types of sprouts, including bean sprouts from green beans and clover leaves, are not recommended to be consumed raw. Bacteria on sprouts are tough to clean just by washing, so they must be cooked thoroughly.

This prohibition applies to everyone, but pregnant women must be more aware of consuming raw vegetables to prevent bacterial infections.

In addition to the several types of food above, pregnant women should also avoid several other types of food, such as liver and sushi containing raw fish, as well as drinks containing caffeine or alcohol.

In contrast, the recommended foods for pregnant women are whole grains and processed products, lean meats, low-fat milk, vegetables, and fruits.

Pregnant women should be more careful in choosing food and drinks. Avoid the types of foods that are prohibited for pregnant women above. If necessary, consult a gynecologist about what foods should not be consumed during pregnancy.
