Sleeping pills are available in various types with different ways of working. For example, there are sleeping pills that work by causing drowsiness; there are also sleeping pills that dampen certain areas of the brain so you don't stay up all night.

This side effect is usually caused by Z-drugs and can occur if you take sleeping pills in excessive doses. 

Allergic reactions 

Various types of drugs, including sleeping pills, can cause allergic reactions in some people. Allergic reactions that may appear due to sleeping pills are blurred vision, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, itching, palpitations, rash, nausea, shortness of breath, swelling of the eyes, lips, and face, and even anaphylaxis.

You can overcome insomnia without taking sleeping pills, one of which is by doing cognitive behavioural therapy. In addition, there are several ways you can do to prevent insomnia, including: 

  1. Avoid eating large portions and consuming alcoholic beverages before bed. 
  2. Caffeinated drinks, such as coffee and soda, before bed. 
  3. Don't smoke. 
  4. Turn off cell phones, laptops, or other electronic devices 30 minutes before bedtime. Schedule sleep and wake up at the same time every day. 
  5. Listen to soft music or read a book before bed. 
  6. Turn off the bedroom lights before going to bed. 
  7. However, if the various methods above can still not make you sleep or even aggravate your insomnia, immediately consult a doctor to get the appropriate treatment. 

You are also advised to contact your doctor if the side effects of sleeping pills are taken to cause chronic fatigue, parasomnia, difficulty concentrating, to severe stomach pain.
