The temptation to play on cell phones before bed is hard to avoid. However, you need to know that this one habit can reduce sleep quality and even hurt physical and mental health! 

Usually, before going to bed, many people will spend time watching movies on TV or laptops, seeing the latest developments on social media via cell phones, exchanging messages through chat applications, and spending quality time with the closest people. 

Well, these bedtime activities often involve cell phones, right? Staring at the cellphone screen before bed affects sleep quality and your health. 

The dangers of playing cell phones before bed are some of the effects of playing cell phones before going to bed that you should be aware of: 

1. Lowering the quality of sleep 

When looking at the cellphone screen, the blue light it emits is known to inhibit the production of the melatonin hormone. Decreased production and release of these hormones can make you more alert and awake and make it difficult to sleep. As a result, you become less energetic the next day and have difficulty concentrating. 

In addition, the beam of light from the gadget screen will also inhibit the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phase. This sleep phase is essential for restoring cognitive function and emotional stability. 

2. Disrupt the circadian rhythm 

The habit of playing HP before bed can disrupt the circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is the body's natural mechanism to regulate sleep and wake schedules and the body's metabolism each day. 

For example, you are an early bird type who is productive in the morning. However, because you play HP before going to bed, you usually sleep at 22.00 because you are used to getting up at 05.00 in the morning, so you sleep at 00.00 and still have to wake up at 05.00. 

If it keeps happening, you will lack sleep and have difficulty focusing on activities in the morning. The lack of time and sleep quality will make you quickly tired and less productive.

3. It causes eye disorders. 

Many people realize that when you open your cellphone or social media, you don't feel like you've spent hours. This habit can trigger computer vision syndrome, you know. Symptoms include fatigue, blurred vision, red eyes, dry eyes, and headaches. 

In addition, often spending a lot of time playing on mobile phones before bed can cause macular degeneration. If ignored, this condition will increase your risk of going blind. 

4. Trigger doomscrolling 

Searching social media before bed, especially if done for a long time, might keep you from reading terrible news and looking for further information. 

This behavior is called room scrolling. As a result, you can feel anxious, stressed, afraid, depressed, and even paranoid about your surroundings. 

You are using your cell phone before bed has a significant impact on your health. Therefore, you are advised not to play on your cell phone at least 1-2 hours before bedtime. 

Instead, you can do other activities considered more beneficial for health and improve sleep quality. These activities include reading a book, writing a journal, taking a warm bath, or meditating.
